I (John) wrote this song after I had read an article about how the last company to manufacture reel to reel audio tape was going out of business. They we're eventually saved by the audio community at large, but this was kind of an emotional snap shot from that time. That situation also fueled the inspiration for the name of the album and the method of recording it.
lyrics
Every star has it’s time to shine
But now your time is soon to come
And as I sing this lonely tune
One second closer to the end my love
Pre-Chorus
The writing on the wall, it bears your name
A reflection of the past, it’s such a shame
What should I expect from this new age?
Your heart is no longer needed
They’ve got copy and paste
What do these vampires want from me?
They want my soul, ain’t never gonna set me free
Their excuses make it so easy
But that’s only what they want you to believe
Pre-Chorus
The writing on the wall, it bears your name
A reflection of the past, I’m such a shame
I tried, but I never found a solution
We survived the battles, but the war was never won
Chorus
Look inside and see
Do you really believe?
A constant occupation of corporate observation
Turn your soul into an equation
They think it works
I don’t think it does (2nd Time Around – “I don’t think its right”)
Artificial duplication of real inspiration
Give respect to what is true
